A Former Man in Blue Getting a Gift of a Lifetime.

Jake Churchwell will now be getting a free house by Operation Forever Home

Midland Tx. (Local 2 / Fox 24) - A fall from grace for one former Midland Police Officer culminated Wednesday with a heartwarming return and a gift fitting for a former man in blue.

The groundbreaking ceremony took place Wednesday morning in Midland for the former Midland Police Officer Jake Churchwell.

Around 200 people attending, all cheering on Churchwell as he drove up to the plot of land that will soon be his new home.

"I was very surprised and just kind of in shock really," said Churchwell.  "I knew about Operation Finally Home but had not heard anything else about it until this morning and I got swarmed by a bunch of you know police cruisers and was escorted here."

With the help of H-E-B, Permian Homes, and Operation Finally Home this police officer now has a place to call his own. Which will be specially made just for him. But, the best part is it comes completely free of charge.

Dan Wallrath is the President and Founder of Operations Finally Home and said he was excited to have a huge hand in making this dream a reality.

"The home will be fitted for Jake's every need that he has," said Wallrath. "It is going to be a place where accessibility is number one for him and his family."

Accessibility is key because Churchwell is strapped to his wheelchair after an accident that paralyzed him from the chest down.

Back in May of 2016, Churchwell fractured two vertebrae while chasing a suspect on Loop 250.

Then, an accident changed his life forever.

Churchwell lost control of his cruiser and rolled, prior reports indicate. He was also partially ejected from the vehicle.

"I never thought about accessibility for a wheelchair until I was in one," said Churchwell. "It really means a lot it is hard to get around."

"We just cant imagine all the issues that come up living like Jake has to live," said Wallrath. "But, with all of the experience that we have had and we pass on to our builders little things that just help makes Jake's life so much better.

With the community coming together to show their thanks to one former police officer. But, the former officer selflessly thanked others for their contributions to his future.

"I thank the community so much. From the bottom of my heart it means so much it means the world to me," said Churchwell. "That they would care this much and do this for me."

Better Homes hopes to have the home finished before Christmas of this year.
